Ox-horn Comb and Brush Care

Ox-horn Comb and Brush Care

Your Man & Mane comb is made of oxhorn (and sandalwood for some of our beard combs), beechwood or black walnut wood base (for the brushes). If taken care of properly, your comb or brush should last many years. Heres our recommendation for preserving your hair care tools:

DO

Combs & Brushes

  1. If necessary, gently wash using cold water and a mild soap, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid detergents that may be abrasive and damage the oxhorn surface of your Man & Mane comb (or brush).
  2. Gently rub a high-quality carrier oil like shea oil, almond oil, virgin coconut oil or jojoba oil into the oxhorn surface. After about 8 hours, remove any excess oil from the surface of your oxhorn comb (or brush) by rubbing with a lint-free cloth. By nature, oxhorn dries out with time and improper care, leaving it brittle and prone to breakage but regular use on oiled hair/beard will naturally keep your comb (or brush) well oiled.
  3. Store your Man & Mane comb in a cool, dry place away from sink tops and areas prone to excess moisture and dry your oxhorn comb thoroughly right after exposure to moisture or use on wet hair.

Brushes

  1. Store your Man & Mane brush in a cool, dry place away from sink tops and areas prone to excess moisture. Preferably, use the complimentary carry bag.
  2. Dry the oxhorn and wooden portions of your Man & Mane brush thoroughly after exposure to moisture or use on wet hair.
  3. The bristles can be cleaned out regularly depending on use to avoid buildup of hair and sebum with the following steps:
    • Comb the hair and excess sebum off the brush bristles.
    • Prepare a brush bath and soak the brush bristles.
    • Let the brush bristles soak for about 10 to 15 minutes.
    • Rinse and clean with water and let it dry.

DON’T

Combs & Brushes

  1. Avoid exposing your Man & Mane comb (or brush) to direct sunlight, heat or excessive moisture as this may lead to alterations in the natural color of the oxhorn.
  2. Avoid immersing your brush, in water (especially warm to hot water). Excessive moisture can expand or deform the horn, leaving it fragile.
  3. Avoid dropping your Man & Mane comb, as this sudden impact as with most Oxhorn products, may lead to cracking or breaking.
